North Bend Citizens:
Here is the personal statement from North Bend Mayoral Candidate James Rose. NBCFGFG endorses Jim because he’s spent substantial time analyzing the issues facing North Bend, and those circumstances that led to us putting forth propositions 6-176 and 6-177. As an accountant, he has made intelligent, thoughtful recommendations to the city on budget matters , along with John Briggs and Frazier Pruett that have been wholly ignored. Jim is the only mayoral candidate with any actual substance to his campaign that addresses strategy, planning, input and implementation of possible solutions to the morass of fiscal and political issues facing the city and its citizens. He has an actual demonstrable record of listening and leadership, not hollow claims. Read on, enjoy and ask questions if you have them. Fellow North Bend Citizens,
As a dad, neighbor, local business owner and a longtime resident of North Bend, I am a candidate for Mayor of our city. My wife, CeCe and I moved to North Bend 18 years ago, after transitioning from a military career in the Navy to the private sector. For my wife, it was a homecoming after being away from the place she grew up and went to school. We moved back to North Bend so that our three kids could be nearer to their grandparents and so we could raise them in a place where the logos on their school clothes didn’t really matter. We also came back to join and continue a family accounting business into the next generation. In 1959, CeCe’s parents, Cecil and Sharon Koberstein established Koberstein & Associates, a small business that CeCe and I proudly continue to own and operate.
I grew up in Rockville, Maryland the oldest of five kids. I graduated from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina with a BS degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, I was immediately commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy. After completing flight school and several squadron tours, I was fortunate to be selected to attend the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA, where I completed a Master’s degree in Financial Management. I subsequently completed additional aviation and shore based assignments of increasing responsibility that included management of large programs, large numbers of people and multi-million dollar budgets.
Throughout our time in the community we have been very active in getting three kids successfully through the North Bend school district. I served on the Airport District budget committee. On several occasions, I have volunteered my professional and personal experiences to be a part of the city ’ s budget committee however, my attempts to volunteer were met all too many times with “ you ’ re not from here” as a justification for choosing someone else. At City Council meetings, when I offered public comment, that same response was usually given as a reason why my comments or suggestions were not given any consideration. Most recently, I was heavily involved in the North Bend Citizen ’ s for Good Faith Government PAC who sponsored voter initiatives 6-176 and 6-177 in the May 2020 election that successfully garnered a landslide vote of the citizens of North Bend. It is clear that now more than ever our City Council is in need of real leadership and a “New Direction.” I may not fit the current council’s “you’re not from here” qualifier, but the fact that I have lived and owned a home, continue to operate a small business and put three kids through North Bend schools in this community for over 18 years is at the very least qualification enough for my candidacy for Mayor. I have a vested interest in the continued growth and success of our community.
Overturning the result of a duly held election in November 2018, and imposing the council’s will on the people of this city is not representative government. City leadership must never again use fear as a way of persuading citizens to pay for essential services such as public safety. The public safety of every citizen is a right – not an option. Rebuilding the faith and trust in our city’s elected leadership must be priority number one for our next City Council.
I am running for office in order to help lead this city into a better future and to make sure that every citizen ’ s voice is heard. The most recent de-funding of the NBPD and the threat to cut police services from 11 pm to 7 pm was the tipping point for me. I can no longer sit on the sidelines and watch our elected leaders willfully choose to abandon their solemn duty to ensure the public safety of our city above all else. I can no longer stand by and watch the city ’ s agenda be dominated by Frisbee golf courses and food truck ordinances, while the most serious issues affecting our everyday lives goes by with little or no debate or attention.
With your support, I stand ready to effectively lead the effort to take on the tough issues. With everyone ’ s help we can get our city on a definitive and positive path forward to the future we all want and deserve.
Respectfully,
James Rose
